Sandra Gidley calls on PCT's to make Elderly Care a Priority
9.41.10am GMT Wed 22nd Nov 2006
Commenting on the annual report released today on general pharmaceutical services Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson, Sandra Gidley MP said: "It is appalling to see that the number of care homes receiving advice from community pharmacists has dramatically decreased in the last decade"
"Given that the CSCI recently reported that almost half of care homes in England are failing to meet the national minimum standard on medication, this decrease is particularly worrying and following the introduction of the new community pharmacy contract it is unlikely to improve"
"It is short-sighted of PCT's not to be commissioning pharmacists to provide care home service as better medicines use and management saves money in the long term"
"The right of the elderly to medicines advice is basic; PCT's should ensure that it is a priority for them to ensure that all care homes are at least meeting the minimum standard on medication"
