SANDRA MEETS WITH HAMPSHIRE FARMERS IN WESTMINSTER

12.00.00am GMT Wed 30th Jan 2008

Local Member of Parliament, Sandra Gidley, has met with members of Hampshire NFU to discuss the issues facing farming in the county.

Mrs. Gidley acknowledged that 2007 had been a very difficult year the county's farmers, and heard that red tape, TB infection and pricing were the biggest concerns of the local branch.

Sandra Gidley said:

"Only 8p in every pound spent on food by consumers goes to the farmer. The four big supermarkets must respond to criticisms by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to give farmers a fair deal."

She said that her party would create a Food Inspector within the OFT with new powers to ensure fair prices for food producers, processors, distributors and consumers.
