GIDLEY GETS ON BOARD WITH BUS PASS SCHEME

4.28.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 3rd Apr 2008

Hampshire and Southampton MP Sandra Gidley has joined Help the Aged to welcome the launch of the new national bus pass for older people.

The new bus pass came into effect on 1st April and people aged 60 and over will now be able to travel free on local bus services anywhere in England. Recent research from Help the Aged has shown that two-fifths of older people in the UK are not within walking distance of a bank, friends and family or health and social services. Sandra welcomed the new scheme, but warned that it still doesn't meet the needs of everyone.

Sandra said:

"The introduction of the free bus pass is fantastic news for older people throughout Hampshire, and across the country.

"Getting out and about is vital to staying healthy and active in later life and I would urge all those over 60 to ensure they take up this new entitlement.

"Unfortunately, some older people won't be able enjoy the benefits of this new scheme due to mobility problems or poor local services. Local authorities should take notice of the Flexible Fares Campaign, and provide alternatives such as taxi tokens, or dial-a-ride schemes. The new bus pass should be a first step in ensuring that all of our older people are able to enjoy the benefits of an active, mobile life."

Help The Aged were delighted with Sandra's support for their campaign.

Kate Jopling, Head of Public Affairs at Help the Aged said:

"It's great to have someone like Sandra onboard. We're hoping that travel concessions come along a bit like buses - with the bus pass being the first in a string of concessions. The next stop being flexible fares."
