"A STITCH IN TIME SAVES LIVES" - GIDLEY7.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 10th Jul 2008 Local MP, Sandra Gidley, is preparing to send the Test Valley and Southampton knitting crazy as she backs a campaign by 'Save the Children' to save newborn babies' lives in developing countries. The 'Knit One - Save One' campaign hopes to reduce the number of children (currently 2 million) that die every year from pneumonia and cold weather. Commenting today, Sandra said: "It is a disgrace that so many children in the world are dying simply because they are cold. "Newborn babies are unable to regulate their own temperature and all too often, the vital heat that the child needs is lost through the soft spot on their head. "That's why it's time for the knitters of the constituency to unite and to make as many hats as we can! I am confident that I can mobilise a small army from across the area in a collective effort to save lives. After all, every hat that is knitted is another life saved!" Sandra is looking to set up as many local 'knitting groups' as possible and is currently liaising with the Association of Romsey Christians to get the ball rolling "I know of several knitting groups which I will be contacting, along with the local churches, and invite everyone who can spare the time to get involved. I will also be investing in several balls of wool!" added Sandra. "This is also the perfect opportunity for those who can't yet knit to learn a new hobby. Why not give it a go today - and save a life?"
