ROMSEY AND CHANDLER'S FORD BECOME PLATFORMS FOR NATIONAL EXCELLENCE

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 16th Jul 2008

Local MP, Sandra Gidley has learned from the Department of Transport, that two stations, Romsey and Chandler's Ford, have been selected to participate in a national pilot scheme to look improving both access to stations and ways for them to become more environmentally friendly.

The two stations will now be surveying local passengers during the autumn, with a view to drawing-up a station travel plan during the winter and measures being implemented from April next year. These may include cycle storage facilities or better lighting to encourage walking to and from the station.

Commenting after hearing the news today, Sandra said:

"This is wonderful! All of us who use trains in Romsey and Chandler's Ford will have the opportunity to better shape the railway stations across the country.

"With fuel prices going up, more people are looking to use trains as an alternative way of travelling. This announcement will hopefully get more people off our roads and onto a greener form of transport.

"I hope too that this scheme will mean that the ticket office in Chandler's Ford opens for longer during day.

"Well done to both Romsey and Chandler's Ford stations! I am confident that they'll provide a great platform for national excellence."
