HATS OFF TO SANDRA, AS ROMSEY GOES KNITTING CRAZY

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 6th Aug 2008

The Test Valley's church, youth and community groups are being urged to join their local MP in the area's first 'knit-a-thon', to take place at the United Reform Church's Parish Hall, Romsey, on 15th August.

Sandra Gidley launched an initiative with 'Save the Children' a couple of weeks ago in an attempt to save the lives of newborn babies around the world by knitting them hats. Since then, babies' hats have been pouring into Sandra's constituency office as Romsey goes knitting mad.

Sandra commented today:

"The large majority of child deaths are preventable and it's wonderful to know that local people are helping save a life for each hat that is knitted.

"We have been receiving bags of hats daily in the office, and I expect the areas first 'knit-a-thon' to be a great success too!

"I encourage everyone to come along and give knitting a go! Rarely can any of us save another life by doing something so simple."

The 'knit-a-thon' will be taking place from 1-5pm and knitters are asked to bring their own balls of wool and needles. For any further information, contact the constituency office on 01794 511900.
