SHOPPERS: FIND A NEW ROUTE… THE NUMBER SIX IS TO GET THE BOOT

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 18th Aug 2008

City MP, Sandra Gidley, has learned that the Number 6 Bus in Southampton is going to be discontinued at the end of this month, leaving no link between Winchester Road and Shirley or Portswood.

This could mean that many locals, particularly the elderly, will no longer be able to access their local shops, dental practices, doctors' surgeries and even the general hospital.

Commenting today, Sandra said:

"I am outraged to hear this news and have vowed to fight these thoughtless, savage cuts.

"It makes no sense whatsoever to get rid of one of the most important bus routes in the city. Unless the decision is changed, it will have a huge impact on many local people's lives.

"We have been led to believe that the modern Conservative party is 'green' and caring. But this move will force some back into their cars and leave others stranded altogether.

"Everyone in Southampton should have the right to access healthcare and basic amenities. I will be working with my colleagues on the city council to do all I can to safeguard the future of the number 6 bus."
